â€Å"Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.† Growing up many children heard this idiomatic expression that implies that physical actions can hurt you such as being hit with a stick or rock, but words or name calling can’t hurt you and you should just ignore it. Bullying has emerged in the 21st century as an important public health issue and there have been incidents where teasing and bullying have turned deadly (Burgess, A., Garbarino, C., Carlson, M. I., 2006). Children that experience any kind of bullying have an increased chance of committing suicide because each one believes that is their only chance to escape and stop suffering. Therefore, it is important to understand what bullying is, the role bullying†¦show more content†¦Bully, Victim, and Bully Victim Bullies are not always easy to detect because they are able to hide their bullying behavior (Burgess, Garbarino, and Carlson, 2006). It is also difficult to recognize their victims because they often internalize the experiences and feel too ashamed to seek help or stand up for their self. Past research studies characterized the roles of the participants as either bully or victim. Bullies are the aggressors and the victims are the people who are targeted by the bully. However, recent studies have found that some participants were actually â€Å"bully victims†. Bully victims are bullies sometimes and other times they are victim of bullies (Salmivalli, 2009). There is evidence that supports the idea that bullying victimization and perpetration are all associated with psychosocial problems (Borowsky, Taliaferro, and McMorris, 2013). According to evidence presented by Salmivalli (2009), people who bully others do so because of a personal idea that they need to attain a high status, be powerful and dominant in status as well as feel that they belong in their social group.
